When Dutch Create The Netherlands

A glimpse of history about a country where I study now has presented in one hour duration of lecture this afternoon. Hermien Miltenburg, speaker of the session introduced herself as Dutch but not from Holland.
“Does it mean that you’re from other part of Netherlands? Since Holland is name of province, oh sorry an area. There are North and South Holland, if I’m not mistaken” I was asking
“That is one of the key of my presentation” she said

The stories go back to 14th century when The Netherlands was part of Habsburg, Spain Empire. At the same period of Golden Age, Dutch became wealthy due to their trading worldwide. As a rich people, they grew with freedom of think and speech. Ideology of catholic empire was not well achieved by Dutch. They rebelled new identity as Dutch, instead of Spanish. Calvinism and humanism thrived in North part of Netherlands, one of the man was Erasmus, an influential humanist in that era. Furthermore about geographic aspect, The Netherlands are divided by Rhine River into North and South part. Nowadays, recognizing Dutch from both area are simply judged by their appearance. Dutch from North is identic to blonde and tall people, while they are from South have dark blonde hair and speak soft dialect.
Revolution in The Netherlands occurred in 15th for 80 years. It was called as geuzen when Dutch declared to build nation separately from Spain. However, it was not Dutch itself who fought for it. People from surrounding who wanted to be independent came to The Netherlands and provoked rebellion. The area began to be land for immigrant. It remains until today as we can see half of population in Amsterdam is immigrant. Anyway, it is humbly spoken that The Netherlands doesn’t exist without immigrant.
Willem Van Oranje was crowned as first king after lead such long period of revolution in 17th. An idea of well hierarchy of a nation was not an issue at that moment. Dutch was united as trading empire instead of political nation. So that during revolution, there was governor who conducted the state before it officially turned into kingdom.
New country was born. Strength of their economic pillar is trading. Agriculture is main sector to feed population. Hence, The Netherlands evolve as second biggest exporter of agro-products after USA in the world. What a big leap for small country! Speaking about total area, one-third of land is below sea level. Dutch were started to organize their land to avoid flood and even worse be drowned. Invention of polder by development of dikes and mill answered this issue. Firstly, dikes was built as strong barrier of water shore. Then water from that area was pumped by mill out to the canal. This technology are keep running until these days. Windmill itself as icon of The Netherlands has been modified with steam and electric energy. Polder cover some parts of this country such as Zeeland, Holland, Utrecht, Friesland, and Groningen.
Holland exported beef and cheese to fulfil demands of grain which was bought from Russia and Poland. Another exotic flower that was actually come from China and Turkey is Tulip now become main commodity of The Netherlands. Original flower has solid colour such as red and orange. When it was planted in The Netherlands, certain disease attacked its bulb and fortunately changed into attractive colour. By coincidence, the colour is popular as fashion trend and it is worth for 10,000 Euro per bulb.
Reputation of global trader has been achieved by Dutch. Design of fast ship sailed all over continents. It was started in 17th when one of trading company called VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) explored good commodity throughout the world. An arrival moment of Dutch to Indonesia to buy spices at first time. The relationship was sharing agreement in the beginning, until VOC expanded the exploration and suppressed other countries. VOC was brought slavery in Africa and South America. In spite of agro-product, they also sold weapon. At that moment, Denmark and Sweden were main client for weapon product due to high tension of war in Scandinavia. These history was admitted as bad record that Dutch ashamed of. However, Dutch fortification in many places especially Indonesia leave more than just a story that influence the nation today.
